The candlesticks we missed

A round teak dining table set for a Danish jul gathering, with a wooden multi-arm candleholder, patterned napkins, and a small Danish flag.

We left behind a pair Swedish candlesticks once. Century-old, nothing special to look at, the kind of thing you'd walk past at an estate sale without a second glance. This was during a move into Over-the-Rhine, one of those purges where you're forced to actually answer the question: what do you want to live with?

A year later we were still thinking about them.

Not because they were valuable. They weren't. What stuck was everything tangled up in them, the dinners they'd sat through, the years they'd quietly been part of. That's when it landed for us: the things that matter are almost never the expensive ones. They're the ones caught up in memory.

It's part of why we started Collected North. Not to sell Scandinavian design, exactly, even though that's most of what shows up here. It's closer to a belief that an object earns its place by being part of a life, not by sitting on a shelf looking the part.

We think about the candlesticks every so often, usually when we're deciding whether something belongs in the shop. If it's the kind of thing someone might still be thinking about a year after they'd let it go, that's usually a good sign.
