Royal Copenhagen Tenera Faience Bowls by Kari Christensen, Pair

Description

A matched pair of small Royal Copenhagen faience bowls from Kari Christensen's Tenera line, glazed a deep speckled blue on the outside with a ring of stylised flowers in violet, blue and yellow around the inside. Both bases carry the KC monogram, the factory's three-wave stamp and the numbers 186/2196, which place the decor in the early 1960s. The painters' initials differ from one bowl to the other, which is how a true pair from the same line looks.

They came to us together and we are keeping them that way: two bowls for olives and almonds, a pair of morning eggs, or salt and pepper at the table.

Condition: glaze bright and even on both, decor crisp, no chips or crazing found.

Measurements: each 4.25 in. across, 2.5 in. tall. Weight 24 oz for the pair.

Found at Tasty Bird Vintage, Cincinnati, September 2026.

About the maker

  • Kari ChristensenKari Christensen (1938-1997) was a Norwegian ceramicist who designed for Royal Copenhagen's hand-painted Tenera faience in the 1960s, then ran her own workshop in Oslo making stoneware, porcelain and public art.
  • Royal CopenhagenRoyal Copenhagen is the Danish porcelain factory founded in 1775 and marked with three wavy lines. Through the Aluminia faience works it also made hand-painted faience, including the Tenera line of the 1960s.

What you are buying

Everything we sell is vintage and nearly all of it exists in a quantity of one. The piece you are looking at is the piece you will receive: it is on a shelf in our space in Cincinnati, already photographed, and it ships from here.

The photographs are part of the description. We photograph the wear along with the rest, and we read the marks and say what they tell us. Where we write "attributed to", we mean exactly that.

Old objects were not made to today's safety standards. Unless a listing says a piece is safe for food, treat ceramics and glass as decorative, and have vintage lighting checked by an electrician before it goes into service.

If you want another photograph, a measurement, or a closer look at a mark before you decide, ask: hello@collectednorth.com. We would rather answer the question than process the return.

Care

Wood and teak

Wipe with a dry cloth, or a barely damp one if it needs it, and let it dry before you put it away. A little mineral oil rubbed in now and then keeps teak from going grey. Never the dishwasher, and not left soaking in the sink.

Ceramics and glass

Unless the listing says a piece is safe for food, treat it as decorative: older glazes and leaded glass can leach metals. Hand wash in warm water, no dishwasher, no microwave, and let hot things cool before they go into cold water. Crazing and a little interior staining on old stoneware are normal and we photograph them.

Silver, brass and metalware

Tarnish is normal and comes off with a soft cloth and a mild polish. Plating wear does not come back, so go gently on plated pieces and stop when the colour underneath starts to show. Hallmarks are photographed in the listing; we report what they say and when they are worn past reading.

Textiles and rugs

Air a piece out before anything else; the smell of wherever it was stored goes on its own. Spot clean with cold water, and take anything fragile or valuable to a professional cleaner rather than the washing machine. Keep vintage textiles away from open flame and heat.

Shipping and returns

Shipping

We ship within the United States. Orders are packed by us and handed to UPS or USPS within 2 to 3 business days, insured for the full purchase price, with tracking by email. Shipping is the carrier's actual rate, calculated at checkout from the weight and size of the piece; orders over $250 ship free by parcel. The full Shipping policy has the detail, including local pickup in Cincinnati.

Returns

You have 14 days from delivery to request a return. Email orders@collectednorth.com with your order number first; we reply with a return authorization and the address. Return shipping is your cost, and there is no restocking fee. If a piece arrives damaged or is not as we described it, tell us within 48 hours with photographs of the item and the box, and we cover everything. Returns and Refunds has the category-by-category detail.

Get in touch

Questions about a piece go to hello@collectednorth.com; anything about an order, a delivery or a return goes to orders@collectednorth.com. Email reaches an actual person, Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm Eastern. When we are sourcing in Denmark, replies run a day or two behind and the site says so.

Where it comes from

Found by hand

We buy from dealers in Denmark we have known for years, and from shops, markets and estates closer to home in Ohio. Nothing goes on the site until it has landed in the United States and been photographed here, so when you order, the piece is on a shelf in our space and not in a container somewhere.

Described honestly

We research every piece and describe it as accurately as we can, including who made it when the marks, the construction and the documentation let us say so with confidence. Where we are not certain, the listing says "attributed to" and means it. Condition notes and photographs together are the description, flaws included, and if we have missed something, that is on us.
